Yuhan Su is the voice of the next generation of jazz musicians in many ways. Although she is deeply rooted in jazz tradition her music is original, emotional, cerebral, and, most importantly, lyrical. Her compositions and improvisations have a unique character, and are marked by a combination of complexity, intensity, and emotional resonance. She is a skilled musician with a great technique but she also has a wonderful sense of melody and wonder. Yuhan Su, a Taiwanese vibraphonist, was recently awarded the DownBeatCritics Poll 2017 in the category “Rising Star of Vibraphone”. Yuhan Su is based in New York and has lived in the US ever since she moved to Boston to study at Berklee in 2008. After that, she performed all over the globe and joined Inner Circle Music’s acclaimed saxophonist Greg Osby. Flying Alone, Su’s first album as a leader (Inner Circle Music 2013, 2013), was widely acclaimed. Brad Farberman, the DownBeat’s April issue, wrote that Su has “intelligence, sensibility, and a haunting feeling of tenderness”. Flying Alone received many music awards and nominations including “Best Jazz Album”, “Best New Artist”, and “Best Performance Album” from the 2013 Golden Indie Music Award. All about Jazz also awarded the album the “Best Release of 2013”. Yuhan’s second album, A Room of One’s own, was released in 2015. It featured her jazz quintet. DownBeat called it “Like the greatest fiction, it’s completely enveloping” (Brian Zimmerman).
