Hiromi Suda, Vocalist/Composer. She was awarded the World Scholarship in 2005 and was admitted to Berklee College of Music. Ms. Suda studied there with many world-renowned musicians, including jazz vocals with Lisa Thorson, Latin American music and Brazilian music styles, with Ms. Mili Bernmejo. Hiromi developed an interest in Brazilian music by 2007. She spent three months in Rio de Janeiro in 2007 to further her knowledge of Brazilian music styles and instruments such as the pandeiro. Not only was her experience in Brazil highly rewarding musically but it also provided a historical context and culture to her passion for Brazilian music. Ms. Suda was a student at the Escola Portatil De Musica Choro School. Celsinho Silva, Jorginho Silva taught her the pandeiro and she studied the choro vocal style of Amelia Rabello. Suely Mesuqita, a Brazilian singer, taught her the MPB style. Hiromi Suda’s knowledge of Brazilian music has allowed her to create a unique and original sound that is widely praised by critics. Ms. Suda was a member of the Choro Democratico and the great flutist Fernando Brandao. She performed at concerts at Ryles Jazz Club, University of Massachusetts, the Brazilian 13th Independence Day Festival, Ryles Jazz Club, University of Massachusetts, and other venues. Clarice Assad’s group performed in NY, including at The stone. Her own band also performs in New York, including at Blue note NY, Zinc Bar, Cornelia street café, and the Kennedy center in Washington DC (Iberian music festival). In 2008, she released her debut album, which was well received and led to a tour with Keita Ogawa, a world-renowned percussionist. The album has received great radio support around the world, with featured performances on several Japanese radio stations. She recorded her second album, “Sou”, in January 2012. It was produced by Romero Lubambo, the great Brazilian guitarist. The album was recorded at Avatar Studios in NY. The band members are Anne Drummond(Flute), Julian Shore(Piano), Keita Ogawa (Percussions/Drums),Yasushi Nakamura(Bass). Happiness Records released “Sou” in August 2012. She did a CD release tour in Japan (Tokyo, Yokohama Osaka Nagoya Hitachi, Mito, Kofu), She performed a CD release concert in New York at the Cornelia Street Cafe in October 2012. She released “Rain Dance”, her mini-album, in August 2013. These are her original compositions. Blue note NY hosted the CD release concert. Her song “Rain Dance”, a mini album, won an honorable mention at the 18th Annual USA Songwriting Competition 2013. It was also selected as a finalist in the 11th Annual International Acoustic Music Awards. Out of approximately 19000 entries, her song “Bird Call”, from her second album “Sou”, was chosen as Semi-Finals in the 2013 International Songwriting Competition. Her song “Sou”, was chosen as the finalist in the 19th Annual USA Songwriting Competition 2014. “Hajimari”, her song, was chosen as the 12th Annual International Acoustic Music Awards finalist. Her song, “Nagi”, was chosen as the finalist in the Annual 21st USA Songswriting Competitions 2016. Anne Drummond, the flutist, co-produced her third album “Nagi”, which will be released worldwide by blujazz on March 7, 2017. The band members are Romero Lubambo(Guitar), Anne Drummond(Flute), Julian Shore(Piano), Keita Ogawa (Percussions/Drums),Haggai Cohen-Milo(Bass). The album was released in Japan by Inpartmaint Inc.
