b. 1975, Hungary. Szabo began playing piano at the age of four and studied in Budapest, Pecs, and then Budapest. He won prizes in Lithuania, Hungary, and the Montreux Jazz Festival in the late 1990s. He also performed at the IAJE conference and in New York City. He studied at the Henry Mancini Institute, Los Angeles in 2001. Two years later, he was a Fulbright scholar at New England Conservatory of Boston. He studied there with Bob Brookmeyer, Danilo Perez and graduated in 2005. He performed frequently during his final years of studies, including gigs with George Garzone and Tim Hagans, Joe Lovano. Harvey Mason, Joe Lovano. Frank Tiberi, Herb Pomeroy. George Russell. Maria Schneider. Szabo continues to perform internationally. He has had spells with Eric Marienthal, Rosario Giuliani and Kurt Rosenwinkel. The latter was featured on Szabo’s 2007 Warner Jazz debut Frictions. Szabo is also a member of Mihaly Borbely’s Barber’s Shop. This band plays improvised music that blends jazz and classics, as well as the Carpathian and Balkans ethnic music. He has also recorded with Agnes Lakatos and Tuzko Ssaba. Allmusic
