Adam Unsworth, soloist and recording artist, is Associate Professor of Horn at University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He is a performer who is committed to performing and commissioning works by living composers with the goal of expanding repertoire as well as redefining the boundaries for the horn. Snapshots, his CD release on Equilibrium Records is a collection of previously unrecorded music that Adam has commissioned many times since he started at Michigan in 2007. His latest release, Balance, is a jazz recording for horn and jazz quintet. It also features original arrangements. His first jazz CD, Excerpt this!, was released in 2006. It received praise from both jazz and classical horn critics. He has released a second jazz CD called Next Step and a contemporary music CD called Just Follow Instructions. This CD features the chamber music composed by crossover saxophonist/composer Daniel Schnyder. Adam was a soloist with the University of Michigan Symphony Band on Dana Wilson’s Concerto for Horn and Wind Ensemble. In February 2011, he was the soloist for this work performed by the Aurora Wind Orchestra in Funabashi City (Japan). Adam has recorded and played with the Grammy-nominated Gil Evans Centennial Project, New York City. He also regularly performs with Slee Sinfonietta (a new music ensemble out of the University of Buffalo). He was previously Fourth Horn of The Philadelphia Orchestra (1998-1907) and Second Horn of The Detroit Symphony Orchestra (1995-1998). He has been a guest performer with the Chicago, San Francisco and San Francisco symphonies. Adam is a former Temple University faculty member and has performed as a clinician and recitalist at numerous universities across the United States. He has also made solo and chamber appearances at Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall. Unsworth studied at Northwestern University where he was trained with Norman Schweikert and Gail Williams, former members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He continued his graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he studied with Douglas Hill. Later, he recorded Jazz Set for Solo Horn. It was released as part of “Thoughtful Wanderings” in 2001. This compilation included Hill’s works for the horn.
