Massimo Urbani was born on May 8, 1957 in Primavalle (Rome). Urbani was the oldest of five children from a low-income family. Urbani began to take an interest in music at the age of six when he went to local bands’ concerts. Urbani, a young man, was exposed to many types of music during frequent visits to Camerata, his father’s hometown. Urbani began playing the clarinet in 1968. Urbani was a member of Monte Mario’s band, under the guidance Gino Tommassetti. He suggested to Urbani that he consider the alto saxophone.
