In third grade, began piano lessons; began trumpet to play in the fourth grade band in school. Jim Fitzpatrick taught him the trumpet/cornet basics through sixth grade. Harold McGee was his mentor through senior high school. He studied with Pee Wee Erwin, a jazz era trumpeter, while at Montclair State College.
