Oscar Valdambrini was a Torino native, born in 1924. He began his career as a violinist in the local conservatory. In 1941, he received his diploma. After a jam session with Rex Stewart, he began to learn trumpet in 1936. He founded the Basso-Valdambrini Quintet, then the Sextet, in 1955. It was one of the most recognizable groups in the history Italian jazz. A band that lasted well into 1980s. He recorded and played with many American musicians, including Chet Baker, Chet Baker (then Sextet), Buddy Collette, Helen Merrill. Ellington, Maynard Ferguson, and Lionel Hampton. He was a member the RAI Orchestra in the Sixties and Seventies. This orchestra used to host radio concerts featuring guest stars like Conte Candoli and Frank Rosolino. In 1997, he died in Rome.
