Hopeton Brown, a scientist, was born in Kingston, Jamaica 1960. He is sometimes known as Overton Brown. His father, a radio and television repair technician, introduced Brown to electronics. Brown began to build his own amplifiers, and would purchase transformers from Tubby’s Dromilly Road studio. He would then continue asking Tubby for a chance to mix. As an assistant at Tubby’s, he began to work as a mixer. He created dubs from reworked Studio One songs for Don Mais’ Roots Tradition label. Mais was given the opportunity when Prince Jammy stopped a session because he was too tired. Barrington Levy’s first hit record, “Collie Weed”, was the first one he mixed. Tubby and Bunny Lee made fun of him, giving him his name. Tubby noticed Brown’s innovative thinking and technical ambitions. King Tubby’s studio was closed at the end 1970s, and Brown became principal engineer at Channel One Studio. He was hired by the Hoo brothers to be the chief engineer. This gave him the opportunity to work on a 16-track mix desk instead of Tubby’s four tracks. His mixes were featured on numerous albums in the first decade of the 1980s, when he rose to prominence. He was Henry “Junjo”, Lawes’ favorite engineer. He mixed many Roots Radics albums, many of which were based on tracks by Barrington Leviey. He did a lot for Linval Thompson, Jah Thomas and others. He left Channel One in 1982 to become second engineer to Errol brown at Tuff Gong studio. In 1985, he emigrated to Washington, D.C. to continue his work as a sound engineer. In the 1980s, he released a series on Greensleeves Records that featured fictitious achievements of Scientist in fighting Space Invaders and Pac-Men and Vampires and winning the World Cup. Roots Radics was his most frequent collaborator and played the music on these albums. According to Scientist’s interview with United Reggae online, Greensleeves sold the albums without his consent. Five of the songs from the album Scientist Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires were used in Grand Theft Auto 3’s playlist. Scientist claims that the songs were used without his permission. From Wikipedia
