Tom Ward

Tom Ward, a composer, musician and computer programmer, hails from Yorkshire. He is currently based in London. Although his primary instrument is the saxophone he has been involved in many projects using clarinets as well as flute in recent years. The Madwort Saxophone Quartet is Tom’s band. It was formed to perform his compositions alongside three other young saxophonists, Chris Williams (Led Bib and Let Spin); Cath Robs (Sloth Racket, LUME); and Andrew Woolf (“Button Band, Alvorado”). John Fordham of the Guardian gave their debut album, “Live at Hundred Years Gallery”, four stars. Tom explores compositions with other ensembles such as Madwort’s Menagerie, a sextet consisting of flute, trumpet, trombone and cello. Tom is passionate about freely improvised music. His group Ma/ti/om, which includes Matilda Rolfsson (swedish percussionist) and Tim Fairhall (double bassist), released their first album “Ashes”, on Raw Tonk Records in 2016. Following their tour, they released their first album “Ashes” on Raw Tonk Records in 2016. He has also formed a partnership with Adam Fairhall (Manchester-based keyboard player), which will see him tour in September 2018. Tom is also part the collaboration that runs BRAK. This is a weekly free improv evening in a South London homebrewshop. Tom is an active member of the London-based anarchic big band Overground Collective and performs across Europe with Beats.
