Victor Provost is widely recognized as one of the most respected voices in the world on the unusual, but often misunderstood steel pan (or steel drum). He has earned a reputation for being a “dazzling” soloist through his many appearances on stages, clubs, and concert halls around the globe. His impressive improvisational voice and style have been well-known. He seamlessly blends genres, with a strong Bebop foundation, contemporary sensibility and roots in Caribbean music. His new album Bright Eyes, which debuted at #5 in the iTunes Top 40 Jazz Charts, was named “Jazz Percussionist Of The Year” by the Washington D.C. City Paper six times. It has received praise from The Washington Post and Downbeat Magazine as well as artists, presenters, and critics. Victor leads his own band, tours with NEA Jazz Master Paquito D’Rivera and collaborates with many of the Mid-Atlantic’s most acclaimed musical ensembles. He has recorded and performed with jazz legends such as Wynton Marsilis, Hugh Masakela and Joe Locke, Terell Stafford and Dave Samuels, Wycliffe Gordon and Steve Nelson. Victor is an Adjunct Music Professor at George Mason University. He conducts master classes and residencies throughout the United States, including at universities such as Berklee College of music in Boston, University of Akron and Miami University. He is also an Arts Ambassador for his home country, the U.S. Virgin Islands. In 2014, he was awarded a Special Congressional Recognition. He returns to the U.S. Virgin Islands frequently to teach and perform as part of Dion Parson’s community-based arts initiative, The United Jazz Foundation. from www.victorprovost.com
