Alan Barnes

The 1970s U.K. jazz scene saw a rising star who would become a sought-after session musician and innovator. Alan Barnes was born in Cheshire, in 1959. He attended Leeds College of Music, where he learned clarinet and alto saxophones. After graduating in 1980, Barnes was a leader of several groups including the Pizza Express Modern Jazz Sextet. He recorded with Ken Peplowski and Dave Newton. Barnes was a dominant player in the saxophone section and the clairnet section at the British jazz awards through the ’90s.
