Anandi

Anandi is a singer and songwriter from Portland. She is part of a musical scene that is rapidly becoming well-known around the world. This includes artists like Esperanza Espaulding, Pink Martini, Jarrod Lawson and Carrie Bronstein, who are all part of the quirky TV series Portlandia. Anandi, the daughter of two professional musicians started her career as a singer-songwriter and recorded three albums of original songs. Anandi’s funk-rock song “Enough of You”, which has more than 3,000,000 hits on YouTube, and other songs have been used in television commercials and spots. Anandi decided to move from Americana to jazz in the early 2000s. She was influenced by the great jazz singers Sarah Vaughn, Carmen McRae and others, and set out to perform the difficult melodies and moods associated with jazz standards. She has been able to gather some of Portland’s best jazz musicians, including Randy Porter and Tom Grant, as well as Dave Wilensky, a saxophonist. They all have deep respect for her peaceful and contemplative style and her beautiful voice. Anandi has built a loyal following over the years, performing at the Rose Festival, the PDX Jazz Festival twice, and at Jimmy Mak’s, the Heathman Hotel, as well as establishing a home base at the Camellia Lounge with her monthly show. Silverwolf/Allegro distributed her second jazz album, “True To Love”, nationally. Anandi has made her music a result of her long-term meditation and Buddhism studies (she is also a teacher at the Portland Shambhala Center). She is never fast or frantic and takes her time. Anandi’s voice leaves you feeling calm, open and able to appreciate every note. Anandi’s sixth album, and third jazz recording, features Mike Horsfall (piano), Dave Captein (bass), Charlie Doggett (drums) and Jasnam Daya Sing (AKA Weber Iago). From www.anandi.com
