Barry is a Canadian drummer who has spent 40 years playing the drums. Barry graduated from York University’s music program and studied drumset with Stan Perry and Pete Magadini. He has worked with many of Canada’s best musicians, led his own bands and accompanied international artists. Barry has been featured on more than 60 recordings, 13 of which were as a leader/coleader. Barry has been featured on many Canadian Tours, as well as being a featured performer in Europe and India. Barry Romberg Group won Alcan Jazz Competition (central area) in 1990. Barry also won a Juno Award for his participation in Brian Dickenson’s “In Transition”, and he was nominated for 11 Juno Awards. In 2001, Barry performed with Micheal Olchipinti’s Creation Dream project, “Songs of Bruce Cockburn”. In 2002, Barry performed with Micheal Tarry’s Creation Dream project, “Songs of Bruce Cockburn”. In 2005, Barry received the Songbook Vol 1 and Al Henderson’s Regeneration in 2010 and Kirk Macdonald’s Songbook Vol 2 and Songbook Vol 1 and Al Henderson’s Regeneration. THE MRC TRIO, a collective group Barry led was nominated in 2003 for Best Electric Band at National Jazz Awards. Barry Romberg’s Random Access was also nominated in 2005/2006/2007/2009 for best electric group. Random Access was awarded Best Electric Group 2008 Barry was also nominated at the NJA for Drummer of the year in 2006/07/08/09; and The Random Access Large Ensemble won Best Big Band at the NJA 2008/09. Barry was also nominated as Producer of the Year by the NJA in 2008. At the 2009 Juno Awards, Barry was also nominated for Producer of the Year in the Contemporary Jazz Recordings category. Barry has had the pleasure of working with many artists over the years, including Joe Henderson, Gil Evans, Hank Jones and Donny McCaslin. Barry is still a freelance drummer, composer, and teacher (currently on the York University faculty and Humber College faculties) and is constantly involved in new projects. Other than leading three bands, Random Access Unplugged and Random Access Large Ensemble; some of his other collaborative works include INSIDE OUT, with Lorne Lofsky, Kieran Overs and an exciting collaboration, The MRC TRIO featuring Hugh Marsh as well as a THREE SISTERS featuring award-winning bassist Chris Tarry. Barry has also been a featured member in bands that were led by Geoff Young and Kirk Macdonald, Lorne Lofsky and Al Henderson, as well as Barry Buchbinder.
