Ben Allison is a versatile acoustic musician/composer who has an adventurous spirit. He has excelled in jazz settings, but has tended to produce more funk- and rock-oriented music on his own albums. He was just nine years old when he started studying music. At the age of 22, he received a B.A. from New York University in 1989. in jazz performance. Allison created the Jazz Composers Collective in 1992. This musician-run non-profit encouraged musicians to take risks and was open to the avant-garde when it presented concerts in New York. The Collective’s 1994 launch of the Herbie Nichols Project was co-directed by Allison and Frank Kimbrough. Apart from being featured on the albums of Ted Nash and Lee Konitz, Allison was also featured live with Clifford Jordan, Clifford Jordan, Judi Silvano and Dave Liebman in the 1990s. Allison recorded his first album under his own name in 1996 when he recorded Seven Arrows for Palmetto. He also recorded with his band Medicine Wheel for Palmetto. Third Eye was released in 1999, and Riding the Nuclear Tiger two years later. In 2002 Peace Pipe was released, Buzz in 2004, Cowboy Justice in 2006, and Buzz in 2004. Allison frequently uses Man Size Safe as his backup band, which consists of Ron Horton (trumpet and flugelhorn), Steve Cardenas(electric guitar), Michael Sarin (drums), and Steve Cardenas (“electric guitar”).
