Bennie Moten (1894-1935) was an American jazz pianist and band leader. He recruited Count Basie in 1929 for his band Bennie Moten’s Kansas City Orchestra. Basie eventually took over as the piano player. Basie gathered many of the best musicians from Moten’s band and formed his own orchestra after Moten died in 1935.
