Bobby Byrd

Bobby Byrd was a long-standing right-hand man in James Brown’s show. He warmly sang solo to the audience and then he retreated to the sidelines as a member the Famous Flames, Brown’s backup vocal group. Without Byrd, James Brown might not have made it to Georgia. In the early ’50s Byrd and his family sponsored Brown’s release from prison. Brown was then given a place in Byrd’s vocal group, The Flames. Brown took over the Flames and was relegated back to the background. Brown’s closest associates and support musicians, Byrd had the opportunity to record his own music under Brown’s guidance, and he released numerous Brown-produced singles in the early ’60s and early ‘70s.
