Bola Sete (born Djalma de andrade) was a Brazilian guitarist who was born July 16, 1923, in Rio de Janeiro. She died February 14, 1987 in Greenbrae. Sete was a jazz musician who played with Vince Guaraldi and Dizzy Gillespie. His song “Bettina”, which he sang, was included on the “Tribe Vibes,” breakbeat compilation. It had been sampled and performed by A Tribe Called Quest. Bola Sete is known as “Seven Ball”. Bola Sete’s name means “Seven Ball” in Brazilian billiards. Bola was the only black member in a small jazz group. While still in school, he studied guitar at the Conservatory of Rio. He began performing with his own sextet as well as local samba bands while he was still studying. Django Reinhardt and Charlie Christian were his early influences.
