Burnt Sugar

Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber was founded by Jared Michael Nickerson, a monster bassist, and Greg Tate, the Village Voice legend. This sprawling group of musicians is known for their prodigious personnel which allows them to freely explore a broad range of experimental soul-jazz-hip-hop styles. Burnt Sugar was initially created to allow improvisational musicians from New York to record, compose and perform material that reflects the diversity and depth of American diasparan musical culture in the 21st Century. Through the use of Butch Morris’s conduction system, the Arkestra Chamber aims to make each performance a new interpretation of its parts. Burnt Sugar isn’t content to stick to straight jackets as the commercial recording industry uses to sell contemporary Black Music. Instead, it freely mixes and matches styles from different eras and genres in order to create its own unique hybrids. These hybrids are built on the foundation of many musical traditions and cutting-edge music technology. The group’s mission is to honor its greatest inspirations, Sun Ra, Duke Ellington, Parliament Funkadelic, and The Art Ensemble of Chicago. This highly skilled crew has played many roles, including Tamar Kali (DJ Logic), Gary Lucas, TV On The Radio, Tamar Kaali, Phish and William Parker. Liz Wright, Wadada Lee Smith, David Murray and Joseph Bowie are just a few of the credits. from http://burntsugarindex.com
