After an attempt to combine jazz and Portuguese folk music, Carlos Barretto decided that he wanted to be “European”. He created a continental sound and invited musicians such as Francois Corneloup and Louis Sclavis to join him. He did his advanced music studies in Austria, and then lived and worked in France for several years, where he met Mal Waldron. This led to a long and fruitful collaboration with the great jazz pianist. He made a long and difficult journey to find his inner voice during this time. One of his results is the CD “Lokomotiv”, and another is Carlos “Zingaro”, which he encountered in live situations. He views his music career as an “eternal apprenticeship”. He believes that to grow, he must “break the rules and break free from the shapes”. He became one of the top international jazz musicians in Portugal through the series of his efforts. Don Moye and Steve Lacy, along with Barry Altschull and Don Moye are some of his ocasional partners. He also plays regularly in Portugal with Mario Delgado and Jose Salgueiro, who are three of the most important players in Lisbon’s jazz scene. He was accompanied by Ze Eduardo and Carlos Bica, two Portuguese double bass players at the top of their ranks in an historic and memorable concert. from www.cleanfeed-records.com
