In 1986, his fame and popularity grew tremendously when he played Reverend Reuben Gregory opposite Sherman Hemsley on the comedy sitcom Amen. Davis played the role in real life of a minister for four years during the run-up to the finale. He was also the associate pastor of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, California.
