Dave was born in Oakland in 1952. In case Dave wanted to become a concert violinist, there was a half-sized violin in his closet. At the age nine, he was playing trumpet. He then moved to baritone at the eleventh age and continued on to drums at thirteen. He eventually settled on electric bass at thirteen. Then, he added upright bass to his repertoire until he switched to saxophone in the twenty-one year old age. Since the early seventies, he has been a specialist in the baritone Saxophone. Sewelson arrived in New York City during the summer 1977. He settled in East Village and began playing in the Downtown Scene.
