Dave Wilson is a jazz saxophonist and recording artist, as well as a composer and educator. He has a busy festival and venue schedule, as well as being a leader in his own bands and as a sideman. Dave Wilson was born in Bronxville and began his musical studies in fourth grade. Wilson is a remarkable saxophonist, with chops and maturity in tone that inspire passions and enthusiasm when listening. He studied with Joe Lovano (saxophonist), Bill Barron (saxophonist), Ralph Lalama (pianist), Glenn Guidone, Tom Strohman and guitarist Steve Giordano (pianist). He focuses on the Tenor and Soprano saxophones, but also the alto and clarinet. This was his first instrument back in grade school. Wilson is the leader of The Dave Wilson Quartet, a contemporary jazz group. He and his band are well-known for their innovative improvisations, individualistic compositions, and original arrangements of standard tunes. Wilson was also the leader of the Canal Street Hot 6 – a well-known Traditional/New Orleans group for many years. He was joined by Ben Mauger, a trumpeter who is one of the most prominent purveyors in this genre on the East Coast. Back in the Day was their first CD. The Canal Street Hot 6 performed on many East coast events, including the Hot Steam Jazz Festival, Essex, CT, the Suncoast Jazz Society, Clearwater, Fla and the Tri-State Jazz Society (Philadelphia/New Jersey/Delaware), Pennsylvania Jazz Society and Baltimore’s Camden Yards. Dave is still very active in this genre. His current Traditional Jazz Group, The Rampart Street Ramblers often features an all star lineup that includes some of the most prominent names in Mid Atlantic Traditional Jazz circles. Wilson was a long-standing member and trumpet player of Dave Stahl’s Sacred Orchestra and Dave Stahl BIG Band. Two DSSO CDs contain his appearance, which are the first recordings of the group. He was part of the big band that included jazz luminaries such as Wynton Marsalis and Tom Harrell (BS).
