David Ake is the Director of the School of the Arts as well as Professor in the Department of Music. His publications include Jazz Cultures (2002) and Jazz Matters (2010). He also co-edited Jazz/Not Jazz (2012). All published by the University of California Press. Ake is a pianist who has collaborated with many of the most outstanding improvising musicians today. His many recordings include the solo-piano CD In Between (JazzTimes called it “poignant and luminous”), The Dark with EEA, (Origin Records), and four albums with The Collective, UNR’s faculty jazz quintet. The Nevada Regents Teaching Award and UNR’s MouselFeltner Award of Outstanding Research, as well as the F.
