He is the embodiment of bluesy, expressive and tasteful sax playing. He first played with Ray Charles before becoming a solo artist. David Newman, a teenager, played professionally in Dallas and Fort Worth with Charlie Parker’s mentor Buster Smith and Ornette Coleman. He also joined a band that was led by Red Connors, tenor saxophonist. Newman was a local musician in the early 1950s.
