Dennis Coffey

Dennis Coffey is an American legend. One man could play guitar alongside legends such as George Clinton, The Temptations, Del Shannon and George Clinton in America, but not in Detroit. The list of famous producers, writers, and artists Dennis has worked alongside is only a small part of the extensive work he has done and the contributions that he has made to popular music. Dennis Coffey made his name as a member The Royaltones. This group had hits in the late 50s and early 60s and performed sessions with Del Shannon. Dennis went on to be a respected session guitarist for several labels during Detroit’s peak as a center of musical innovation. His most notable work is as a member the Funk Brothers, which backed a vast number of Motown hits, including “Cloud Nine”, “Ball Of Confusion” and “Just My Imagination.” This is where he introduced the wah-wah sound to Motown (and soul / r).
