Derek Brown

Derek Brown, a pioneer in the saxophone, lives in Chicago and plays in many bands and projects throughout the city and around the globe. Derek Brown’s distinctive playing style is a mix of jazz, funk, and pop. He amazes audiences all over the world with his innovative “beatbox-like”, creative techniques. Brown is currently involved in multiple projects including his vocal/instrumental band, The Derek Brown Syndicate and the up-and-coming Chicago funk/fusion supergroup Low Spark. He also has his solo show, “BEATBoX Sax.” Derek grew up in a small-town Michigan musical family and discovered his musical talent in the summers that elapsed between Hope College years. Afterthought was Derek’s third band. He began writing original music and experimentation with the saxophone. He was already well on his path to developing his own style of playing by the time he graduated from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Derek served as the Director of Jazz Studies at Abilene Christ University for six years. Derek founded and directed the popular jazz/rock fusion band The Abilene Jazz Collective. In addition to teaching classes and lessons and starting the Abilene Jazz Fest, as well as directing various jazz ensembles, Derek also grading. Derek also challenged himself to make the most of one horn with no electronic aid. Derek discovered something new by using some well-known techniques such as double-tonguing or slap-tonguing. He also used some less-known techniques like Tartini sounds and other percussive sounds. Derek now lives in Chicago with Rachel and is a freelance saxophonist. This was a dream that he has had since middle school when he first picked up the instrument. He regularly releases new BEATBoX SAX music videos, and tutorials to his Youtube channel. His online success has earned him endorsements from JodyJazz Mouthpieces and Legere Reeds.
