Frode Gjerstad was the altoist, Kent Carter was the bassist, and John Stevens was the drummer. They were known as Detail, which emphasized free improvisation. This live set was recorded four months before Stevens’ 1994 death. The final song, “On Their Own”, features a sad alto/bass duet. While not all moments are equally interesting, the music is captivating because these musicians were attentive to one another and constantly reacted to what was being said. Each player functions as an equal. Frode Gjerstad, who is on top form in “Last Detail”) deserves to be better known. Allmusic
