American jazz pianist Dick Wellstood was born November 25, 1927 in Greenwich (Connecticut) and died July 24, 1987 in Palo Alto (California). Along with Ralph Sutton, he was one of few stride pianos who emerged in the 1940s, during the rise bebop. Wellstood was a member of Bob Wilber’s Wildcats, 1946. He became a major player on the trad music scene in the 1950s, when he played alongside Sidney Bechet, Conrad Janis and Roy Eldridge. In the 1960s and late 1950s, he was the New York City’s house pianist at Nick’s and Metropole. In 1965, he played in South America with Gene Krupa and then joined the World’s Greatest Jazz Band. He was a local musician in the 1970s. He studied law and briefly practiced in the 1980s. He also played with Kenny Davern in the 1980s.
