Emile Barnes, a respected New Orleans clarinetist was unable to record many recordings in his career. However, he can be heard at sessions for Folkways in 1951-52 (which were released in the ’70s on vinyl) and Jazzology in 1961 and 1963. He was the younger brother of Polo Barnes, and learned from early clarinetists such as Alphonse Picou and Lorenzo Tio, Jr. He worked alongside Buddy Petit and Chris Kelly (the former in the 1920s). He spent most of the 1930s and 1940s not in music but he was still active in the 1950s, ’60s, and even with Kid Howard. Allmusic
