Farnell Newton

Farnell Newton, born March 21, 1977, is a jazz trumpeter and composer. Born in Miami, Florida, he is a composer and jazz trumpeter. In 1992, he moved to Philadelphia and attended the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts. Newton studied in Philadelphia with his uncle Conny Murray (saxophonist/arranger) and his uncle Sunny Murray (drummer, one of the most innovative and influential drummers in avant-garde history). After moving to Denver in 1994, Newton graduated from the Denver School of the Arts. He then moved to Ohio to attend the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Newton studied music performance at Oberlin with Wendell Logan, and Kenny Davis, a trumpeter. While at Oberlin, Newton performed with James Moody and Muhal Richard Abrams. Newton graduated from Oberlin and moved to Portland, Oregon where he performed with Willy Vlautin (Billy Hart), Willy Krebs (Pete Krebs), and Ricardo Lemvo.
