Federico Calcagno (1995), a clarinetist and bass clarinet player, composer, improviser, and musician from Milano, Italy, is Federico Calcagno. He studied jazz clarinet and classical at Milan Conservatory. In 2019, he received his Jazz Master in Bass Clarinet from Amsterdam Conservatory. Additionally, he attended the International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in Canada. Federico’s first album was released in February 2019 with the Italian band The Dolphians. This is Federico’s first album with his Italian band The Dolphians. Federico was awarded the first prize in the “Premio di Consevatorio Di Milano 2018” chamber music competition with Tri(o)ttico. He also won the critics award, 2nd prize in the prestigious Italian Jazz Competition dedicated to Massimo Urbani (Premio Internazionale Massimo Urbani 2019, and two other 2nd prizes: Keep an Eye International Contest 2019 and a solo jazz performance in “Concorso Bettinardi2020”. Federico is active in Amsterdam, Milan, and Bruxelles. Federico is the leader of The Dolphians and Liquid Identities. He also co-leaders Fade in Trio. He is a regular sideman in The Dolphians, Liquid Identities, Aviv Noam Quartet (AM.OK), Adrian Moncada Sextet and Francesca Remigi’s Archipelagos. He also played with Tino Tracanna’s Double Cut, Giovanni Falzone’s Contemporary Orchestra, and Tino Tracanna’s Conduction. He has been interested in rhythms of Carnatic music, and the Conduction as instant composition. Federico and Stab Freeze Collective found common elements between “Butch” Morris’ Conduction and Walter Thompson’s Soundpainting.
