Frank Rosaly (Francisco Javier Rosaly Amoros Rosello – b. Frank Rosaly (Francisco Javier Rosaly Amoros Rosello – b. 5/30/74 Phoenix AZ) is a Chicago-based drummer and composer. Since 2001, he has been involved with the experimental and improvised music communities in Chicago. He is an integral part Chicago’s musical fabric and has mastered the fine line between rock, jazz, and experimental music. While he spends a lot of time performing, composing, teaching, and organizing musical events, he also tours regularly both domestically as internationally. Frank is active in numerous projects in Chicago, New York, and Europe. Matana Robert’s Chicago Project and Rob Mazurek’s Mandarin Movie are just a few of the groups. The recent performances include Thurston Moore’s Thurston Moore, Tony Malaby and Roscoe Mitchell. Also, Paul Flaherty and Marshall Allen have collaborated with Eric Boeren, Ken Vandermark and Michael Zerang. Rosaly is the leader of Cicada Music’s sextet. It includes James Falzone (cl), Jason Stein(bcl), Keefe Jackson, Jason Asasiewicz, Jason Roebke, and Keefe Jacob (cbcl), Jason Asasiewicz, and Jason Roebke, who perform music inspired by cinematic experiences. Green and Gold is Frank’s quintet, which also includes Nick Mazzarella (alto), Cameron Pfiffner(reeds), Tomeka Reid and Anton Hatwich. They explore the music collaborations between Prince Lasha and Sonny Simmons. A solo project, Milkwork, is Frank’s, is a study of electronic manipulated percussion instruments. He creates dense sound walls using controlled feedback and amplified drums. Frank combines sound-scapes created through analog electronic synthesizers with extended techniques using unamplified drum sets. Frank coordinates the Ratchet Series in Chicago, which is a weekly showcase for creative music at Skylark. Frank also teaches at the Old Town School of Folk Music. Frank holds a Northern Arizona University performance degree. He studied with Billy Higgins and Peter Donald, Bob Moses and Dom Moio.
