Grand General

This quintet is a Norwegian heavy fusion band. It was originally known as the Kenneth Kapstad group. Some have suggested that the group may be a spin-off of Motorpsycho, drummer Kapstad’s long-standing Trondheim-based psychedelic-prog-metal outfit. The Kenneth Kapstad group was formed to perform at Trondheim Jazzfest 2010. It featured many former students of Trondheim Musikkonservatorium jazz, such as Kapstad, Erland Slettevoll, violinist/violist Ola Vvernberg. The latter won a Spellemannprisen (Norwegian Grammy), for Jazz Album Of The Year in 2011. He also received positive attention for his performance on Motorpsycho/Stale Storlokken’s opus The Death Defying Unicorn. Trond Frones was also part of the band. He is a former student of the Trondheim Musikkonservatorium jazz program. The notion that this was a Kenneth Kapstad-led band has been dispelled. The quintet changed its name from Grand General to Bushman’s Revenge before the debut Rune Grammofon album. Grand General was compared to the Mahavishnu Orchestra, which featured Jerry Goodman as violinist. However, this quintet is thicker, more pummeling, and more fusion-infused arrangements. Kvernberg and Frones were responsible for Grand General’s writing. Frones added a metallic edge to the group’s compositions. Allmusic
