Herbert Joos, 21 March 1940 – 7 Dec 2019, was a German jazz trumpeter and flugelhornist. Joos was a flugelhorn, trumpet, and bass player, as well as playing baritone-horns and alphorn. He was part of the Modern Jazz Quintet, New Jazz Ensemble, and Fourmenonly groups in the first half the 1970s. He also participated in Free Jazz Meeting in Baden-Baden and Free Jazz Day in Frankfurt. He also taught flugelhorn workshops with Harry Beckett, Harry Carr, Kenny Wheeler and Ack van Royen. He collaborated with Bernd Kongrad and Wolfgang Czelusta during the Blow project. He was also a leader of his own orchestra and quartet. His most well-known assignment was that with the Vienna Art Orchestra. His warm and big tone and the romantic-impressionistic influences combined with the affinity of free improvisation gives him a strong and personal profile within the European jazz community. Allmusic
