Jack Wilkins is a superior, but somewhat underrated, improviser. His infrequent recordings as an improviser have proven that he ranks close to the top. Wilkins studied early with John Mehegan and learned vibes, classical guitar, and piano. However, he has remained a jazz guitarist throughout his career. His long association with Buddy Rich earned him a solid reputation. He has been a sideman for Buddy Rich, Jack DeJohnette and Eddie Gomez. His recordings for Mainstream Music Masters, CTI and his pair of essential Chiaroscuro album in 1977 (the single CD Merge, which reissued all the music but one song) are what allow you to see how talented Jack Wilkins was.
