Jake Hanna

Jake Hanna, a superior drummer who was equally comfortable playing in big bands or small combos, was an asset to many sessions. Toshiko Akitoshi (1957), Maynard Ferguson (58), Jake Hanna was the house drummer at Storyville, Boston (1959-1961), Marian McPartland (1959-1961) and the Woody Herman Orchestra (1962-1964). He was a regular studio musician in Merv Griffin’s big band (1964-1975), and moved with the show to Los Angeles (1970), where he remained. Hanna was part of a group that recorded for Concord in 1975. He also played with Supersax and became a regular at jazz parties. He recorded many Concord dates, mostly as a sideman. Jake Hanna, 78, died in Los Angeles on February 12, 2010. Allmusic
