Jan Wallgren

JAN WALLGREN (1935-1996) Jan was born in Oslo, and grew up near Stockholm. For many years, he was a jazz musician who toured extensively with his own band and played in various jazz orchestras. His piano playing and compositions were a major part of the group Bengt Ernryd gathered during the 1960s. Jan is a composer and soloist with the Swedish Radio Jazz Group, as well as the Polish Radios Big band. He can be found on CD and LP. Jan has been a pianist soloist, leader of orchestras, and theatre musician. He also taught musicians and singers, as well as classically-trained pianists and music students. He also wrote film music and theatre music. His opera “Balagantjik” was first performed at the Royal Swedish Opera in 1987. His Requiem “For levandeoch doda” (“For Living and Dead”) is one of his most important compositions. It was set to poems by Tomas Transtromer. Jan’s last composition for The Stockholm String Quartet was “Vandring”, with text taken from Dag Hammarskjold’s book “Vagmarken” (Markings).
