Joe Carter began guitar lessons at an early age. He eventually became a jazz guitarist. Earning a B.A. B.A. He earned degrees in Jazz Performance, and his Jazz Ph.D. at New York University. There he also studied privately with Allan Hanlon and Sal Salvador, as well as pianist Don Friedman and Lee Konitz, saxophonist Lee Konitz, and pianist Don Friedman. His current focus is Brazilian Jazz. He combines Straightahead and Bebop Jazz styles with Samba, Bossa Nova, and Northeast Brazilian music. His two most recent CDs, UM ABRACO NO RIO (An Embrace Of Rio), and his previous two CDs show how familiar he is with Brazilian music. Joe Carter has previously performed with the world-respected harmonica virtuoso Mauricio Einhom and Luis Alves, a bassist, and Joao Cortez as part of different groups during Joe’s numerous performances in Brazil. The SAMBA RIO TIO CD, Joe Carter’s American version of his band, features the talents of Nilson Matta, a legendary Brazilian drummer, and Portinho, a bass player. DUETS, which features Carter playing in a guitar/bass combo with Rufus Reid u0026 Harvie Swartz, and ART FARMER are two recordings that demonstrate Joe Carter’s jazz playing.
