Alexander was born in Denpassar, Bali, in 2003. He first saw a piano when he was six years old. Joey rose quickly within the Indonesian jazz scene, despite not having any formal jazz education. He was featured at the Jakarta and Copenhagen jazz festivals in 2013 and won Odessa’s international improvisation contest, beating over 200 adult competitors. His many admirers include Wynton Marsalis and Herbie Hancock as well as Bill Clinton. Joey was a star-studded performer at jazz galas for Jazz At Lincoln Center, The Jazz Foundation of America, the Apollo, and the Arthur Ashe Foundation in 2014. Alexander signed with Motema, a rising label. He also has deals with a leading jazz booking agency. Alexander is quickly becoming a popular international performer.
