John Wallace Carter, born 24 September 1929 and died 31 March 1991, was an American jazz clarinetist, saxophone player, and flute player. He was born in Fort Worth, Texas and played in the 1940s with Charles Moffett and Ornette Coleman. Carter’s base was on the West Coast from 1961. He met Bobby Bradford there in 1965 and they worked together on several projects. He played with Hampton Hawes, Harold Land and others. His extraordinary solo concerts were what made him famous in the 1970s. He performed three days at the New Jazz Festival Moers 1979 with Theo Jorgensmann, a German clarinet player. John Carter received a wide audience and positive reviews. Jorgensmann and Carter met again in 1984. The clarinet was the focus of the Berlin Jazzfest’s program. Carter performed solo, but they played together after that. Carter recorded Roots and Folklore Episodes in American Folk Music between 1982 and 1990. Five albums were dedicated to African-Americans and their histories. Jazz critics praised the complete set as one of the greatest albums of the 1980s. John Carter died from a non-malignant brain tumor in 1991. A clarinet quartet was planned with Perry Robinson and Jorgensmann. He was later inducted into Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame. From Wikipedia
