John Stowell

Scenes Band information is available under the Scenes entry. John Stowell started his successful career with private study with Linc Chamberland, guitarist, and John Mehegan, pianist. John was fortunate to have them as mentors and he could continue to learn from them. He met David Friesen, a bassist, in New York City a few years later. They formed a duo which recorded and toured extensively for seven years. The band performed in Australia, Canada, Europe, the United States and Australia. They continue to perform 30 years after their first meeting. John and David were joined by Paul Horn, a flutist, and Robin Horn (on drums), for a historic tour through the Soviet Union in 1983. It was the first time that an American jazz band had been invited to perform in Russia in over forty years. John played in many cities in Russia in 1993, 1995 and 1998. His two sold out performances in Kursk were possibly the first American jazz musicians to make an appearance there. John continues to record, tour and teach internationally. He was Artist-In-Residence in schools in Germany and the United States. In 1991, he was an assistant director and performer at the PDX Jazz Summit. Since 1995, he has been a columnist for a variety of magazines including “Downbeat”, Canadian Musician, “Guitar Player”, Canadian Musician,” “Soundcheck”, and “Guitar Club”, (Italy). David Friesen was the bassist. He is featured on the soundtracks of two Academy Award Nominated short films, Will Vinton Studios in Portland, OR and Bosustow Studios in Los Angeles, CA. “Through the Listening Glass” with David Friesen was selected by the Los Angeles Examiner as a “Talent Deserving Wider Recognition” by Downbeat’s International Critics Poll.
