John Vanore

John is a Woody Herman alumnus. He has a deep love for big bands and the energy they bring. However, his passion for improvising and the intimacy of small groups draws him to improvising. Vanore was a Dennis Sandole student and composition was and still is the driving force behind his writing and playing. Vanore states that “Curosity” goes beyond an album title. It is my credo!” This focus led to the decision to create and write for a new group. Abstract Truth was created from the idea of the intimacy and firepower of small groups with the power and intensity of big bands. John was able to experience the turning point in his life when he attended a summer program directed by Oliver Nelson. Nelson’s unique identity was inspiring. Studying with Dennis Sandole helped to further develop and strengthen the same kind of identity thinking. John joined the Woody Herman Band after college. After returning to Philadelphia, he was a regular in the trumpet section for Philadelphia-based performers Sammy Davis (Michel LeGrand), Louis Bellson, and Sammy Davis. He was also the Director of Music at Widener University. He has recorded and produced for Wyndham Hill and Miramax, and has been awarded a Gold Record by Atlantic Records (www.johnvanore.net).
