Johnny Blas

Johnny Blas, the stylish conguero, has been leading his band since 1992. They released their first album, A Night in L.A., on Discos Dos Coronas in 1995. Blas’s solid playing was complemented by some solid songwriting. He was supported by a talented band of musicians including Angel Rodriguez, Dan Weinstein, Dan Weinstein, Kerry Loeschen and Humberto Ruiz, as well as guitarist Mark Gutierrez, bassist Paul Perez, and trombonists Humberto and Kerry Loeschen. The band continued to work hard, releasing two more albums under the CuBop label, Skin and Bones 1997 and Mambo 2000 1998. Both were highly praised by the Latin and Jazz music press. Blas’ continued this tradition in 1999 with King Conga, which was also released on CuBop. This album features Guitierrez and Weinstein’s songwriting skills and has the same funky, jazzy Afro-Caribbean groove as his previous three albums. Allmusic
