Johnny Raducanu, born Raducan Cretu (1 December 1931 – 19 September 2011), was a Romanian jazz piano player of Romani heritage whose family has a long musical history dating back to 17th century. Born in Braila, he began playing double bass at age 19 and then switched to piano. Some of his many collaborations with other musicians outside Romania included those with Slide Hampton (trombone) and Art Farmer (trumpet), and Friedrich Gulda (“piano”) during his musical career. Raducanu was awarded an honorary membership to the Louis Armstrong Academy in New Orleans in 1987. He founded the Romanian Jazz School and, over a half-century of musical careers, discovered, nurtured, and trained many generations of Romanian musicians. Leonard Feather called him “Mr. Jazz in Romania”. He was President of the Romanian Jazz Federation. Raducanu was married from 1962 to 1970 to Geta Costin. Raducanu, who died in his Bucharest apartment on Oltarului Street, was interred in Cernica, Ilfov County near the capital.
