Joris Roelofs

Joris Roelofs was a 1984 Aix-en-Provence native who was raised in Amsterdam. At six years old, he began to play classical clarinet and at twelve he started playing the alto saxophone. He began performing with Vienna Art Orchestra at 21 and was a member of the orchestra from 2005 to 2010. Joris is the lead alto of the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, Netherlands. Joris was the first to be awarded the Princes Christina Concours Jazz. He has also won the Pim Jacobs Prize. He was the first non-American to receive the Stan Getz/Clifford Brown Fellowship Award, which was presented by the International Association of Jazz Education in the USA. Joris was awarded the Deloitte Jazz Award in 2004. This Dutch award is for young musicians just starting their international careers. He was chosen for Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition in 2008. In 2007, he graduated from the Conservatory of Amsterdam as a Master of music. He then moved to New York in 2008. Joris has performed with Eric Harland and Aaron Goldberg, Dee Dee Bridgewater. He also played with Lewis Nash, Dee Dee Bridgewater. He was a soloist with the Orkest Van het Oosten, a classical orchestra, and the Jazz Orchestra of Concertgebouw, a jazz ensemble. As a special clarinet soloist, he has been recorded with the Metropole Orchestra. He was a leader at the North Sea Jazz Festival twice and at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam several times.
