Josh Evans

JOSH EVANS was born in Hartford, CT and was raised there. He first heard a recording by Dizzy Gillespie and Roy Eldridge at age 10. Josh started studying with Raymond “Dr. Rackle’ Williams, and within one year, he was performing regularly with Dr. Rackle’s Sound Griot Brass Band. By the age of 14 Evans’ musical career began to take shape when he started to study with and be mentored by the celebrated alto saxophonist/composer, and educator Jackie McLean. Josh’s career would be shaped by McLean, who shared the stage with Miles Davis and Charlie Parker. This experience would pave the way for Jackie McLean’s performances at venues in New York such as the Blue Note, Iridium and Regattabar. Both are located in Boston, MA. The Bushnell Center for Performing Arts is in Hartford, CT. Josh started a three-and-a-half year tour with the Winard Harper Sextet in April 2005, performing and teaching master classes. At different times, the group included Billy Taylor, Frank Wess, and George Cables as well as trumpet players Terrell Stanton, Claudio Roditi, and Phillip Harper. In 2006, the group recorded a beautiful album called “Make It Happen” for Piadrum Records. Josh was invited to play a two-week tour of Siberia in April 2007 with Benny Golson, a master saxophonist and composer. Evans would perform with master Drummer Rashied Al during this period and would be the band’s trumpet player for two years. The Rashied Al Quintet performed in 18 countries and produced one CD live in Europe. Josh Evans would continue to play with Rashied Al until his untimely passing in 2009. Josh Evans released his debut album, ‘Portrait’ in January 2011. This album shares Evans’s influential relationships with Jackie McLean and Raymond Williams, Alan Palmer, Ralph Peterson, and Ralph Peterson.
