Juan Alamo, a composer, performer and educator, is well-known. He is a Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music Bachelor of Music graduate and a Master of Music and Doctor of Music degrees with Jazz as a related field from University of North Texas. He is originally from Cidra, Puerto Rico. Dr. Alamo has given solo recitals at universities, percussion and jazz festivals across the United States, Central, South America and the Caribbean. His solo performances and appearances with Jazz ensembles on television and radio in Puerto Rico, Mexico and Venezuela have been highlights. Juan is currently an Associate Professor at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and the Director of The Percussion Ensemble. Alamo is a Marimba soloist as well as a percussionist. He has performed recitals throughout the United States, Central, South America, and the Caribbean. Dr. Alamo has appeared on TV and Radio in Venezuela, Puerto Rico and the United States. He has shared the stage with many renowned artists, including Keiko Abe and Ney Rosauro. In 2007, Remembrance was his first solo marimba album. The album includes both standard repertoire and two of his original compositions for marimba. Dr. Alamo’s second CD, Marimjazzia, was released in 2014. It features original compositions and arrangements for jazz standards like “Afro Blues” or “Waltz for Debby.” Dr. Alamo’s 2016 album Pursuing Freedom was chosen to represent Parma Records at this year’s 58th Grammy Awards. His first Latin jazz album Ruta Panoramica will be available in spring 2018. Dr. Alamo is also a composer and has had several pieces published by major publishing houses such as Drop 6 Media, C. Alan Publications and Mallet Work Inc. Arthur Lipner also assisted him in the creation of the jazz vibes guide Milt Jackson – Transcribed Solos of the Master. His marimba method, Music for Four Mallets, was released by Dr. Alamo in 2011. This collection contains original etudes that are suitable for both beginners and advanced marimba players.
