Ka Baird is a multi-instrumentalist, recording artist, producer, and performer based in New York City. Her live solo performances, which include energetic body movements, extended vocal techniques and interactive psychoacoustics, are well-respected. She is known for creating a vigorous, present-tense and energetic type of “body music”, which seeks extreme release through physical exertion as well as psychic extension. She is one of the founding and continuing members of the psych-folk/avant-garde group Spires That In The Sunset Rise founded in Chicago in 2001. In 2017, Drag City, an independent Chicago label, released her debut solo album “Sapropelic Pycnic.” In October 2019, RVNG Intl released her latest album, “Respires”. Recent international and national engagements include performances at the Unsound Festival in Krakow, Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, MoMA PS1(NYC), Issue Project Room, NYC, The Hirshhorn Museum in Washington D.C., The Kitchen (NYC), The Institute for Contemporary Art (Philadelphia), The Hirshhorn Museum in Washington D.C., The Kitchen (NYC), The Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia), The Institute of Contemporary Art (Philadelphia), TUSK Festival Of Endless Gratitude, Denmark, Copenhagen, DK She was a music resident at Experimental Sound Studio in Chicago, Pioneer Works in Brooklyn, and was the 2018 Jerome Foundation Artist In Residence at Roulette Intermedium in Brooklyn. She was awarded an emergency grant from the Foundation of Contemporary Arts in 2020 for her upcoming premiere of “Vivification exercises” at The Kitchen. She also collaborated closely with Moriah Evans, choreographer, on her pieces “Figuring” at The Sculpture Center in January 2018 and “Configureā at The Kitchen in December 2018.
