Kai Winding, May 18, 1922 – May 6, 1983 was a well-known Danish trombonist and jazz composer. He is best known for his work with J. J. Johnson. Winding was born in Aarhus (Danemark). His family immigrated to America in 1934. In 1940, he graduated from Stuyvesant High school in New York City. Shorty Allen’s band was where he began his professional career as a trombonist. Winding joined Benny Goodman’s band after the war and then moved to Stan Kenton’s orchestra. He teamed up with J. J. Johnson in 1950 to record a series of highly successful trombone duet recordings.
