A London-born DJ, keyboardist, and producer, Kamaal Williams is a pianist, DJ, as well as a producer. His funky sound is influenced by acid jazz, ’70s jazz fusion and other electronic traditions. He’s established himself in the global club culture since his solo album, The Return. He’s been a musician in many bands since the mid 2000s. However, his rise to fame was in 2016 when he joined the jazz-funk duo Yussef Jamaal with Yussef Dayses. Their 2016 album Black Focus received high praise. Williams launched his solo career with The Return, which was also cross-pollinated in 2018. Born Henry Wu in South London and raised by a Taiwanese father and a British mother, both of whom were graphic designers, he has a rich cultural heritage. As a child, he was taught Mandarin by his parents. He also learned Muslim calligraphy which he used as a graffiti artist. He was a passionate music lover by his teens and played percussion in school’s band. A love for garage/grime duo Oxide was an early passion.
